Position Summary

The Tape Librarian is responsible for maintaining and managing the inventory of magnetic computer tapes and NAS/USB disks within the Houston Tape Library. This role ensures accurate registration, verification, storage, and shipment of all media while supporting daily tape library operations and database management activities.

Key Responsibilities

Tape Library & Database Operations

  • Serve as the primary individual for tape library projects and initiatives.
  • Act as the main point of contact for the xmittal program.
  • Coordinate and manage all tape pools, including creation, expansion, reduction, and labeling.
  • Verify all outgoing client deliverable disks and tapes.
  • Register and document all incoming media in the database.
  • Resolve media catalog issues for users and archive personnel.
  • Manage media error reporting, identifying and flagging soft and hard errors.
  • Coordinate daily media requirements with Computer Operations teams.
  • Generate media and inventory reports as required by DMS and IT Data Processing.
  • Conduct database searches to locate and track media inventory.

Library Operations & Media Handling

  • Ensure proper handling and care of all computer tapes and media.
  • Retrieve, file, and sort media for internal departments and users.
  • Prepare, retrieve, and box media for outgoing shipments.
  • Perform quality control, labeling, and filing of incoming media.
  • Load and eject media from silos using system-generated lists.
  • Follow all library procedures, work instructions, and quality standards.
  • Perform routine maintenance of the tape library.
  • Investigate and locate "not in rack" media and coordinate findings with supervisors.
  • Ensure compliance with Quality Assurance, QHSE, and departmental policies.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the supervisor or group leader.

  • Internal: DMS Users, Shipping, Inventory/Archive Coordinators, Network/System Groups, Computer Operations

Qualifications

Education

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required; College Degree preferred

Experience

  • 3 5 years of experience as a tape technician or in computer operations

Skills & Competencies

  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities
  • Strong understanding of tape library operations and database systems
  • Knowledge of MMS tape management systems
  • Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to train and support backup personnel
  • Comfortable working under time constraints

Physical & Travel Requirements

  • Ability to lift 20 25 lbs
  • Minimal local travel required
